This is me circa 1994 holding the almost complete shuttle. The engine bells and other assorted details had yet to have been added.
The shuttle has wings!! If you look close you can see the 1/32" balsa planking used to cover the crew compartment. The OMS pods have yet to be made.

This head on view shows the compound curves of the orbiter belly. Not a flat area in sight. This was some of the most difficult planning and construction.
